DURING HIS junior year, when Harry and his mother began to seriously discuss his college options for the first time, she practically kidnapped him to visit schools he had no real interest in, and one night, seemingly out of the blue, she insisted they attend a program at the Verona Public Library called “Seeing Beyond the Ivies.” In the end Harry was glad he had gone because the lecture only reinforced his initial instincts. For two hours the speaker admonished the capacity crowd that they would get a decent, if not better, education at a lesser-known school where the professors actually taught their own classes and were not just famous figureheads who spent most of their time on the road, promoting their books. In Harry’s mind, the speaker’s entire argument was negated by the fact that he, himself, was a Princeton graduate. Evidently, Harry was not alone in this perception because the question-and-answer session snaked its way back to discussing strategies about how to get into an Ivy League school that went on so long the librarian finally had to flip the lights on and off several times to get people to acknowledge that it was time to go home.

A one-hour motivational speech about the virtues of a bunch of schools he had never heard of was not likely to have much effect on a plan some seventeen years in the making. He had spent his young lifetime listening to his father blame all of his own problems on an inferior education. Lou said he constantly watched people in his office get promoted when they were clearly less capable than him, simply because he had gone to Maryland. Now that Harry was older, he thought there might have been more to the story. For one thing, his parents had met in college, and so far as he could tell, his mother was pretty successful in her field. Another thing was that by the time his father lost his third job, he had begun to look and smell a little funky.
